Trap / Neuter / Return

There can never be “TMI”—too much information—about “TNR,” a term that is often misunderstood. Trap/Neuter/Return is known by the acronym, “TNR.” We also think it’s a “Totally Necessary Requirement!”

TNR has been proven to be the most humane and effective method for controlling community, free-roaming, stray and feral cat populations.

Now’s a great time to define how FVCR uses the word, “feral.”

“Feral means that an animal was either herself or himself socialized at one time, or that the animal’s ancestors were.” “However they have reverted to an un-socialized state, you would not say a ‘feral coyote, skunk or raccoon’ because they are wild animals. However, you would say a ‘feral dog, cat or horse.’ Those species of animals have been domesticated and are largely viewed as companion animals.”

When practiced on a large scale, TNR dramatically reduces the number of kittens and cats impounded at local shelters. The results are what we at the Fraser Valley Cat Rescue are committed to—lowering the death rate while increasing adoption of cats already in the shelters.

Whatever you call it: alter, fix, de-sex, sterilize, spay (female) or neuter (male), it's the right thing to do. If you're ready to speak for cats and act on their behalf, don't hesitate to get involved and help us make a difference. We welcome you!
